Flash Fiction # 5 & 6

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

I tend to be little late when it comes to posting, but hey its better late than never right.

“Sniper ships are the Ship of the Line in modern fleet battles.” Stated Rurik.

He was looking out of the view port at the glowing cloud of gasses that surrounded his ship, a Rokh class battleship. He turned back to Lieutenant Korsakov who he had being talking to.

“The modern sniper fit vessel though is not a true sniper vessel. All the fleet’s ships gather onto one spot within full sight of the enemy and proceed to engage them at long range. This is contrary to what a sniper is. A true sniper remains hidden from their enemies and when the sniper the strikes the target does not see their death coming.”

Rurik waved his hand towards the gasses of the nebula that surround his ship. “This nebula hides us from the directional scanners of our targets. Our passive targeters prevent them from know about us when we lock onto their ship. Our Advanced Railguns and Spike hybrid ammunition allow us to hit a target from up to 200km away; of course we can’t lock a target from that distance, that’s why we need our sensor boosters. We, Lieutenant are a true sniper, destroying our enemy before they even know we are here.”

“Ensign Hoth bring up our targets on the holo display.”

Rurik looked at the display and watched as the two gallante shuttles began to extend docking tubes to each other as their occupants attempted to transfer the good they contained.

“Weapons control lock onto the target and prepare to fire once the shuttles docking tubes are connected.”

“Target locked commander. Ready to engage.”

Rurik watched as the docking tubes locked together, sealing the fate of the ships.

“Our targets, Lieutenant, don’t know it yet but they are the dead. Weapons control fire when ready.”

The reverberation of eight Railguns launching a single deadly volley was felt throughout the ship. On the holo disply the hybrid charges tore through the shuttle, disintegrating it and killing its passengers before they even knew what happened.

Flash Fiction #2: Yulai

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

This weeks Flash Fiction topic from over at Ecliptic Rift is Yulai and the CONCORD core communications hub that was destroyed there.

Rurik looked up at the star intersecting a broken circle. Some of the stars points had being broken off and circle itself was warped and misshapen with parts of it missing altogether. Flashes of light and the glowing sparks of superheated metal intermediately lighted the symbol; the broken symbol of CONCORD.

Rurik turned back to his men, who where all clad in space suits and carrying the equipment necessary to cut their way through the ruins CONCORDS core communications hub in Yulai. His team now stood at the threshold of their objective, the CONCORD Yualai archives, housing all the information that had being sent from their agents on the field to the corporate headquarters.

“How much longer before we are through Corporal?”

“Not long Sir. This last bit is harder to cut though due to metals warping”

Rurik nodded in response and looked back down they path they had taken to get here. It wasn’t pretty. They had being forced to cut through most of station and work their way though tight gaps all the way making sure they did not puncture their suits. Some of his men had not being careful enough. They payed the price.

They worst part had being the bodies, some flash frozen others burned horribly and more were in pieces. They just floated through the ruins condemning any who dared to desecrate their final resting place.
“Captain, were through.”

Rurik turned back to see a hole had being cut through where the door had once being revealing the archives beyond. Thankfully they had not being damaged too much, due no doubt to reinforced walls.

“Right men, get in there and retrieve any hard drives that are salvageable and make it quick. I’m sure none of you want to be here any longer then necessary.”

Rurik stood in front of the hole and watched his team get to work. Soon all this information would be his. Everyone knew knowledge was power.
